Baltimore is still haunted by its history of banks and government agencies systematically excluding people of color from buying property in specific neighborhoods. This racial redlining led to concentrated pockets of disinvestment around the city that persist today. Neighborhood Housing Services of Baltimore (NHS) has worked to increase homeownership across the Baltimore region since 1974. It has paid particular attention to removing barriers for Black and Brown residents. Its wrap-around services for first-time homebuyers start with improving their financial health and extend through the home buying process. NHS partners with communities on funding for revitalization projects that preserve the interests of long-time residents and keep cultural assets intact.
After stabilizing the organization's finances, NHS Leadership was ready to revisit its strategic plan. It was preparing to offer significantly more resources and opportunities for building wealth through homeownership in thriving neighborhoods to families and individuals.
